Featured Project – Buchanan Road
In this featured project, Black Earth Pavement transformed an aging private road using an eco-friendly and cost-effective method. By pulverizing the existing asphalt and repaving in two lifts, we strengthened the road’s foundation and ensured long-lasting durability and visual appeal. Here’s a look at how we approached the project and why this process delivered the best results.
Project Overview
Our client needed their private road rebuilt to improve both performance and longevity. The existing road was crumbling and had many large potholes and cracks throughout. After assessing the situation, we chose to pulverize the existing asphalt, recycling the material as a base layer. This allowed us to lay two lifts of new asphalt on top, creating a stronger, longer-lasting road. Let’s dive deeper into this featured paving project!
Step 1: Pulverizing the Old Surface
We started by pulverizing the old asphalt, breaking it down and mixing it with the underlying base material. This step not only created a solid foundation but also allowed us to reuse the existing materials, keeping the project eco-friendly and reducing costs. We then compacted the pulverized asphalt, ensuring a strong base for the new surface.
Step 2: Paving in Two Lifts
Next, we paved the road in two lifts. The first lift, paved with Grade 3 mix, laid down a sturdy base layer of asphalt, which we compacted for a smooth, stable surface. After it cured, we applied the second lift, using Grade 5 mix – a finer asphalt mix designed for durability and aesthetics.
Why Two Lifts?
Paving in two lifts offers significant advantages:
- Stronger and more durable: The base layer supports the road’s structure, while the top layer provides a smooth, wear-resistant surface.
- Improved drainage: The process ensures better grading and water management, reducing risks like pooling or surface damage.
- Longer lifespan: By using this method, the road will last longer, cutting down on the need for frequent repairs and maintenance.
The Result
With both lifts in place, the private road now delivers on both functionality and aesthetics. The surface is smooth, durable, and blends perfectly into the surrounding landscape. After 1,500 tons and 4,660 of linear feet of paving our client was thrilled with the results, and we’re proud to have delivered a road built to last.
